Our client was a 23-year-old high school graduate who had moved from New York to the Bradenton area where she cleaned condominiums on Long Boat Key. A physically active and attractive young person, our client had the nickname “Legs.” One evening she and her friends were headed to Sarasota to go dancing when an automobile pulled in their path. Our client banged her knee on the dash causing an injury, which was ultimately diagnosed as a tear to the posterior cruciate ligament. During this routine surgery a vein behind her knee was cut. Worse, the condition was not immediately diagnosed and bleed into the tissues of her leg causing a serious condition called compartment syndrome. The treatment required that the muscle compartments of her leg be sliced open to relieve the pressure, causing extensive disability and scarring. Her ankle had to be fused. Settlements from the doctors, hospital, automobile driver and automobile manufacturer (seatbelt design issue) totaled $1,762,500.
